After Listless Loss, Islanders Schedule Gets Increasingly More Difficult
If the Islanders are going to find a way to make the playoffs, they would have earned it.
The New York Islanders had it easy…well…sorta with their first two games out of the trade deadline. Although heading out to California for a traveling back-to-back isn’t ideal, playing the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks was two beatable opponents to get close to that wild-card spot.
Their San Jose showing wasn’t stellar, but they got two points with a 4-2 victory. Against Anaheim, the team was all over the place often and found themselves trailing 3-0 early in the third.
The final score read 4-1, with Tony DeAngelo’s wicked against the grain wrister from the high slot getting the Islanders on the board at 15:10 of the third.
The problem with that result is that, based on the standings, the Islanders’ final 20-game schedule — now 19 — is brutal.
It’s the “third-hardest” remaining schedule in the league with opponents owning a .572 winning percentage.
Here’s the teams the Islanders play in calendar order: LAK, EDM, FLA, PIT, MTL, CGY, CBJ, VAN, TBL, CAR, TBL, MIN, WSH, NSH, NYR, PHI, NJD, WSH, CBJ.
Gauntlet.
The silver lining in this is that after LA, six of the next seven games are on home ice.
This season, the Islanders are 15-13-2 at UBS Arena, but have won 8 of their last 10 games in their barn.
If they want to keep their postseason hopes alive, they have no choice but to show up in front of their crowd.
Considering who the Islanders have at home coming up, with Edmonton and Florida, these are two elite teams. It’s an excellent test for these current Islanders but also a great test for Patrick Roy.
He’s not usually a matchup’s guy, but without Brock Nelson, Roy must take advantage of having second change.
But before worrying about their first game back home, they need to find a way to get a point against LA after failing to get any against the Ducks.
Puck drop is coming your way at 10:30 PM ET on Tuesday.

Turn Out the Lights the party’s over! It also makes Lou’s decision not to clear out additional cap space even with retaining this year and for future considerations look even worse. We didn’t need anything back for some of these guys, the cap space was valuable enough. This was a repeat of the Ranger no show game. How he manages to clear space in the office season is a mystery. Unrelated, We are stuck with a ton of dead weight Engvall Mayfield DuClair.
