Appreciating The Honesty From Islanders Brock Nelson On Unknown Future
Nelson has been transparent in every interview about his future.
Brock Nelson’s future with the New York Islanders seems blurry. On the one hand, the Islanders could keep No. 29 a lifelong Islander as long as he signs a team-friendly deal.
On the other hand, Nelson has been one of the most underrated players in the NHL for years and shouldn’t be settling on what is likely to be his last big NHL contract.
While Islanders fans may disagree on the course of action the team should go with the 33-year-old, Nelson’s honesty should be appreciated.
Talking with Nelson, not once did he make any kind of statement that he wanted to be with the Islanders or that he wanted to leave. He’s been consistent in explaining how complicated this decision is and how he wants to do what’s right by everybody, including his family and his team.
And up in Montreal with Team USA, he’s kept that same mindset (H/t Ethan Sears):
"I want what's best for me, my family and team and everything. There's a lot of factors that go into it. I know everybody wants an answer right now. That's not how the world works. You don't always get what you want. Everything will sort itself out. Lou's a great guy. I love playing for him. He's done a lot for me. He's given me a great opportunity the last seven years I've had him. My agent has a great relationship with him and communicates with him.”
Fans deserve honesty. And that’s what fans are getting from Nelson.
Now, the longer this plays out, the more likely it is that Nelson will be wearing another sweater following March 7th’s NHL Trade Deadline.
We don’t know what Nelson has said to his agent or to his general manager, but if he’s been as honest with them as he’s been with the fans, that’s something the Islanders should appreciate as well.
Nelson could be pulling a Tavares, saying he doesn’t want to be traded and wants to stay.
Committing to a franchise verbally eliminates a lot of the noise and continuous questions about the subject, allowing the player just to go and play hockey.
While Nelson likely doesn’t want to have to take these questions daily, he’s not lying or telling people what they want to hear.
He’s leaving his options out on the table, and it’ll be up to the Islanders to take his plate or pass it to another table.
Islanders, Canucks' Elias Pettersson & The 4 Nations Face-Off Break
If the New York Islanders can acquire Elias Pettersson from the Vancouver Canucks, it would be a franchise-altering move.
It's a fit that makes too much sense, with his buddy Bo Horvat on Long Island and Pettersson seemingly needing a change in scenery.
Despite the Canucks moving J.T. Miller to the cross-town rival New York Rangers, an industry source shared with The Hockey News that Pettersson remaining with Vancouver wasn't 100% yes.
The Islanders' interest in Pettersson still remains high, and that likely won't change. However, it takes two to tango and winning may have impacted Vancouver's mind, at least for a little bit.

I don’t think Brock or Dobson go anywhere. Dobson’s play this year has to be a huge concern. He plays with a woh is me body language and a defeated look. There has always been a lack of on ice confidence with Dobson, but you always thought he would grow out of it. Maybe he hit rock bottom and will rise up from here. A lot of talent, but if he doesn’t get stronger and tougher he is just average.
