EXCLUSIVE: Barry Trotz On Naming Anders Lee Captain And Why It Was The Right Choice
Barry Trotz reflects on naming Anders Lee captain of the Islanders in 2018, why the decision was an easy one, and the impact Lee had on the franchise's success.
On Tuesday morning, the New York Islanders were informed by Anders Lee’s camp that the longtime captain intends to test free agency after the two sides were unable to come to terms on a contract extension.
Lee’s initial ask was believed to be a three-year deal, while general manager Mathieu Darche remained steadfast in his desire to keep any extension to one year.
Sources indicate Lee’s camp eventually lowered its ask to two years, but Darche still would not budge. Now, with free agency set to open, both sides will see what the market looks like before determining whether there remains a path forward.
What I'm Hearing About The Islanders Ahead Of Free Agency
With NHL free agency set to open at 12 p.m. ET on Wednesday, the New York Islanders still have several unresolved situations to sort through.
Since 2018, Lee has served as captain of the Islanders, wearing the “C” with pride both on and off the ice. Whether through his leadership in the dressing room or his impact in the community, Lee has represented the organization with class throughout his tenure.
If this is truly the end of Lee’s time on Long Island, the respect he has earned from teammates, coaches, media members and fans alike is immeasurable.
Former Islanders head coach Barry Trotz, who named Lee captain following John Tavares’ departure in 2018, recently spoke with The Elmonters about why Lee was the obvious choice to wear the “C” and what he meant to the organization during one of the most successful stretches in recent franchise history.
