Chat With Bo Horvat About The Islanders Struggling Power Play, Maxim Tsyplakov In Front Of Goal

The Islanders power play is 2-for-19 out of the gate and may benefit from keeping things simple rather than passing around the perimeter looking for the "perfect" look.

With Duclair Out, Islanders Barzal & Horvat Need To Shoulder More Of The Offensive Load

ELMONT, NY -- The New York Islanders have a goal-scoring problem, and now, with Anthony Duclair out long-term, the team's top players need to step it up.

While it's not fair to blame Mathew Barzal and Bo Horvat for the Islanders' lack of goals this season, both haven't been producing to the level expected out of the gate.

Giving these two the best linemate possible is critical. But these two produced on their own last season. And until Duclair comes back or another top-level player is brought in, they just have to mimic what they did in 2023-24 and be the difference-makers they are being paid to be.

Chat With Bo Horvat About The Struggling Power Play & Maxim Tsyplakov

EAST MEADOW, NY — The New York Islanders power play is off to a slow start, going 2-for-19 with the man advantage through six games (10.53%).

Bo Horvat, on the top unit, has one of the two power-play goals, two total via bumper one-timers glove side, with Mathew Barzal notching both primary assists with dishes from the left side.

It was clear from the get-go that Horvat in the pocket was the primary game plan, but there were still a few options from the top group.

Anthony Duclair, who has the other power-play goal, was a one-time option on the right side. Barzal, who showed off his shot last season, found himself with shooting lanes given Horvat drawing attention. And Noah Dobson, at the point, is always a threat.

So, why weren’t the Islanders finding ways to score on the power play?

It was about the volume of shots, from both units.

There was too much perimeter passing, pretty passing, that resulted in no looks toward the goal, and, well, if you don’t shoot, you can’t score.

With Duclair now out long-term, Islanders head coach Patrick Roy decided to mix up his units:

PP (QB-LW-RW-Bumper-Net)

PP1: Reilly-Palmieri-Horvat-Pageau-Lee

PP2: Dobson-Barzal-Nelson-Holmstrom-Tsyplakov

I spoke with Horvat about the power play and Maxim Tsyplakov:
