Game Day: Islanders vs. Red Wings
Islanders face Red Wings as part of 16-game night across the NHL.
As the NHL hosts its second-ever night of 16 games, the New York Islanders (2-1-2) play the Detroit Red Wings (2-3-0) as part of an action-packed night on the ice.
Puck drop at UBS Arena is scheduled for 7:45, and the game can be found on MSGSN2.
The Islanders went 1-2-0 against Detroit last season, dropping the bookend matchups of their season series. New York’s lone victory against the Red Wings came on Feb. 29 at Little Caesars Arena.
However, the Islanders will be without forward Anthony Duclair, who suffered a lower-body injury in their win over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday. General Manager Lou Lamoriello said the injury is not season-ending but is considered “long-term.” Liam Foudy was called up from the Bridgeport Islanders on Tuesday to replace him.
WHERE THEY STAND:
The Red Wings enter play coming off a statement win over the Nashville Predators on Saturday. Luke Schenn broke the ice for the Predators in the first period, but Detroit leveled the score on a Vladimir Tarasenko goal. Dylan Larkin gave Detroit the lead through two periods, but Steven Stamkos’ first goal with the Predators tied it at two less than a minute the third. However, Andrew Copp gave Detroit the lead back almost three minutes later, and Simon Edvinsson and Copp added empty net goals to help Detroit pull out a 5-2 win.
The Islanders defeated the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday 4-3 in a shootout. New York jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on goals by Kyle Palmieri and Bo Horvat, but Montreal got goals by Cole Caufield and Logan Mailloux to tie it by the first minute of the second period. The game remained tied into the late stages of regulation, where Anders Lee buried a rebound to put the Islanders back ahead. However, Caufield answered with just over two minutes to go, forcing the game to overtime. Neither team found the back of the net, sending the contest to a shootout.
The ensuing skills contest needed nine rounds to finish, with Palmieri and Simon Holmstrom scoring for the Islanders and Oliver Kapanen and Emil Heineman answering for Montreal. Noah Dobson made the most of his shot in the ninth, while Mailloux could not convert, giving the Islanders the tight victory.

MATCHUP TO WATCH: Patrick Kane vs. Brock Nelson
The matchup to watch involves two players that have their opponent’s numbers. Starting with the Islanders, Brock Nelson enters play with 16 goals against the Red Wings in his career, the most among active Islanders; his numbers include a hat trick against Detroit on Feb. 9, 2018. Prior to going scoreless against Detroit in their last meeting, he had a four-game point streak with four goals and two assists in that stretch.
Meanwhile, Patrick Kane scored a goal in each of the two games he played against the Islanders last year. Lifetime, he has 13 goals and 13 assists for 26 points against New York to lead the team. With Kane being the catalyst to a late-season push that almost got them to the playoffs last season, it’s paramount the Islanders keep him quiet on the stats sheet.
WHO IS HOT:
The Islanders’ third line has its fingerprints on recent victories. On Saturday, Jean-Gabriel Pageau hooked up with Lee for the team’s third goal of the game, with the latter notching his second goal of the season. Holmstrom’s goal in the shootout was the second of his career.
In addition to his shootout winner, Dobson added a pair of assists in the first period of Saturday’s game. He leads the team in assists this season with four and enters Tuesday five points shy of 200 for his NHL career.
Mathew Barzal has recorded a point in eight of his last 10 matchups with the Red Wings. In that span, he’s totaled two goals and 10 assists for 12 points, giving him the team lead in helpers against Detroit with 20 for his career.
Ilya Sorokin will start for the Islanders on Tuesday. Against the Red Wings, he is 4-2--2 with a 2.70 GAA and .908 SV% in nine career matchups, most recently taking the loss in their last meeting with five goals against on 23 shots.
OPPONENT NOTES:
One of the biggest surprises for the Red Wings to start the year has been Copp. He has three goals across Detroit’s first five games, tied with Larkin for the team lead.
Three different players are tied for the team lead in points for the Red Wings with four. Larkin has three goals and an assist, Alex DeBrincat has two goals and assists each, and Mortiz Seider has four assists to lead Detroit in scoring.
Alex Lyon will get the nod for the Red Wings against the Islanders. He only has one career start against the Islanders, taking the loss with four goals against on 26 shots on Feb. 29. He made 37 saves in their win over the Predators on Saturday.
QUOTABLE:
"I was very happy with him. I really liked the way he played in training camp. I thought it was hard to let him go. He did everything we asked for, and he's been playing well in Bridgeport. He deserved to be with us right now." — Patrick Roy on Foudy
“Speed, I think, is the biggest thing with him. But he's also a smart player. He's good at both ends of the rink and really reliable. Adding his speed to our lineups is gonna be great for us, I'm sure.” — Bo Horvat on Foudy
“It was great. I felt really good in camp. It was great to start down there and get my legs under me. I think it'll help me up here. There's always nerves for every game, to get an opportunity again but it's going to be a lot of fun." — Liam Foudy
Lines From Last Skate:
NOTE: Alex Lyon will start for the Red Wings tonight
