Going 1-on-1 With Islanders Rookie Maxim Tsyplakov
EAST MEADOW, NY — New York Islanders rookie Maxim Tsyplakov had a tremendous NHL debut, with a goal, six hits, and strong play in front of goal on the power play.
His goal gave the Islanders a 4-3 lead with just 2:07 to play in the third, which they ultimately blew moments later before falling 5-4 in overtime to the Utah Hockey Club.
After Tsyplakov lit the lamp, he could be seen kissing his stick blade.
“I’m always talking to my stick,” Tsyplakov said.
He was doing more than talking. He just really cares.
Following Friday’s practice, I caught up with the 26-year-old to get his thoughts on a few other things.
NO ROOKIE LAP
When the Islanders hit the ice for warmups on Thursday, we expected Tsyplakov to lead the group onto the ice and take his rookie lap.
