We need to take a step or two backwards in order to be in a position to move forward. That means cleaning out big contracts for young players, prospects and high picks.
Maybe be competitive in 2-3 years. Also we need bring in muscle in order not to be pushed around. I was the only one saying, why did we trade Ross? The answer was he stinks. We could sure use his stinkiness today. Being bad and being weak is a bad combination or said differently, fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life.
When I see this team, I see virtually the same group of players that have been here for the last 5 years. I get that they saw success under Trotz nearly 3 and a half years ago now, but most of them are older, slower, and less effective than back then. Nelson, Lee, Palms, Pageau, Cizikas, Martin have all been great Islanders, but loyalty to these guys only gets you so far. I think Nelson and Palms are both effective players, but that also means they have the most value. If I am ownership, the results and low attendance would be very disturbing to me. I think it is time for a more aggressive retool or rebuild and that starts with making some tough trades. Lou doesn't do that though, so it may be time to consider moving on from him.
If I’m management I’m not happy! We have poured assets into the entire UBS and The Parks Atmosphere. However the Hockey Operations from the Islanders to Bridgeport is a raging mess. Lou and Patrick fix it now, if not find someone or change the roles. Team needs a Heart Transplant!
There is a lot of guys on this team that once dragged into the fight will rise to the occasion. We need a spark plug or a wake up call. Change the locker room dynamics too many Dad’s and Mom’s in there! Great if you want to produce Boy Scouts and good citizens. Myself I want to follow a team that Wins I couldn’t give a shit about manners and civility. Tampa Bay’s Kuch post game interview after last cup was hilarious and fantastic. He ain’t worried about being buttoned up and the All Star Skills contest He wants to be great and win Cups!
Why go to these games or watch them on TV they aren’t competitive. UBS and The Park should be a destination, they have done a great job with the off ice product. Management has to say to Lou and Patrick get something done to re- ignite this team and make it a winner. Patrick knows he has too many business and family men. Throw in a dash of 86’ Mets a little LT a few guys that don’t give a f**k and want to win above everything else. Barry quote about being dragged into the fight is correct.
Martin there was zero reason to give him a new contract if he had a use it was when Tuchuck was slapping Varley around and taking a crap in our crease. Dudes a family man he isn’t looking to bring it anymore.
Is it a matter of waiting? What about the total sum of the last three years plus? There is no magical run in this team, and the simple reason there is no hunger to win or better yet destain for losing. The leadership and chemistry of this locker room is not conducive to winning. There is no fire, no reckless abandoned, nobody to drag everyone into the fight as Barry would say. It’s a bunch of business and family, and that’s what ails the Islanders. We need less guys with briefcases and cliches “We need to be better” “Just have to turn the page” “Puck just not Go In”
Prime example: Panthers played poorly in the first period last Saturday, so what did they decide to do in that locker room coming out for period two. Let’s turn up the intensity and get back to physical hockey unlock our talent by leaning into our physicality.
Islanders shrunk and all the air came out, simply because they were unwilling to meet the Panthers intensity. Funny the night before they showed a brief glimpse. Alex Romanov type players is what this team is in desperate need of. That would change the calculus in the locker room, team would be more inclined to score greasy goals. We are not a high flying finesse team, but we play like we are!
