ELMONT, NY — Patrick Roy just gets it.
From the moment he was named head coach of the New York Islanders on Jan. 30, the Hockey Hall of Famer has made it his mission to make the Islanders’ faithful proud.
In every press conference, he mentions doing things for the fans, the people who spend their hard-earned money to come to watch the team play.
On Sunday, in front of a few thousand season ticket holders on hand for their practice at UBS Arena, Roy could have made it easy on the players. But, he put them through his usual practice, with sandbaggers at the end:
Then, while the Islanders concluded practice with their team stretch, Roy was handed a microphone where he addressed the fans with an incredible speech that ended in roars:
“The fans are important. They're very important to us and the players always talk about them. To see them here in numbers means a lot to me and to our entire organization, but mostly the players,” Roy said. “I mean, the players enjoyed going on the ice today. They wanted to have a good practice for the fans, and I thought it was fun for the fans to get a bit of a taste of how we practice, how we run the practice, what we do, and they deserve that.
“They’re here every night. They're supporting us every night, and we do care, and we want them to continue to spread the word for this organization that we have more and more fans in this area on Long Island. We want to make sure that our fans are proud of us, and we're going to continue to work extremely hard for them.”
After practice, I asked Bo Horvat and Mathew Barzal about that speech:
Bo Horvat: “He's super passionate. He wants to win, and so do we. You want to have your teammates’ backs, but you want to do it for the people like the people out there today who came to show their support year after year. You also want to do it for them. So, as much as we want to do it for each other, we want to do it for the fans as well.
Mathew Barzal: “We want to run through a brick wall for our team. As much as Patty gets us going and excited, there's a lot of character and love in this room. We want to win for each other as much as we want to win with Patty.”

Alongside Lou Lamoriello, Patrick Roy Now Has Fingerprints All Over This Islanders Team
From the moment Patrick Roy walked through the doors of Northwell Ice Center and took the ice with the New York Islanders, you knew things were going to be different.
There was no longer going to be a "country club" mindset.
No one was going to be comfortable. Every minute of every game was going to be earned.
While Roy had a tremendous effect on the Islanders, helping them earn a playoff spot, how much of a say would Roy have on the roster?
The answer…a lot.

You gotta love the accountability and the brand of hockey Roy is committed to. The team seems razor sharp physically and lineup looks stronger than the last few years. They needed to find some unexpected talent and with Max and Anthony they did.
