ELMONT, NY — The New York Islanders were officially eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday night after falling 4-1 to the Montreal Canadiens.
Ultimately, the Islanders’ players didn’t take care of what they needed to down the stretch. Their play is what got Patrick Roy fired, going 0-4-0 in his final week before hiring Pete DeBoer — they are 1-2-0 under him.
Dropping six of their last seven games in the midst of 10 of 12 at home to close out the season, while starting that stretch in a playoff spot, is a tough pill to swallow.
But it’s not just about this latest stretch. And it’s not just about one area of the ice.
