Today, the league’s brightest youngsters hit the ice for the 2025 Upper Deck Rookie Showcase.

Ryan Leonard (WSH), Sam Dickinson (SJS), Gabe Perreault (NYR), Zeev Buium (MIN), Alexander Nikishin (CAR), and Islanders prospect, No. 1 overall pick Matthew Schaefer, are just some of the many names hitting the ice at MedStar Arena, the Washington Capitals’ practice facility.

There’s one name on the list that many around the NHL will be shocked to see, and that’s another Islander: Marc Gatcomb.

Undrafted out of the University of Connecticut — where he was teammates with Ruslan Iskhakov — Gatcomb played a combined 117 AHL games and six ECHL games before getting a crack in the big leagues.

Flash-forward to now, after signing a one-year deal this summer as a pending restricted free agent, Gatcomb is being invited to an event such as this.

He may not be flashy like some of the other prospects here, but he low-key made his mark on Long Island, and now the Islanders could be letting a secret out of the bag.
