Three Reasons Why Mathew Barzal Should Be Back At Center In 2025-26
It's time for Barzal to go back to his natural position.
When the New York Islanders acquired Bo Horvat, franchise forward Mathew Barzal was immediately shifted from center ice to the newcomer’s wing.
There’s no question that the two had really strong chemistry, with Barzal having his most productive season in 2023-24, recording 80 points (23 goals, 57 assists) in 80 games. That was his most since his Calder-winning season, where he recorded 85 points (22 goals, 63 assists) in 82 games.
However, this season, Barzal missed 52 games due to two separate injuries, depriving the Islanders and their fans of seeing if he and Horvat could consistently produce at the same level.
So, why should the Islanders move Barzal back to the wing if he has proven to be able to produce on the wing?
Let’s dive in.
