The hope from many New York Islanders fans when the club announced the hiring of Mathieu Darche as the next general manager is that he’d be aggressive in turning the franchise around.

Many hoped — and still hope — that some contracts will be moved at the 2025 NHL Draft and that others will be bought out to create more cap space, allowing the Islanders to go big-game hunting for players like Mitch Marner and Nikolaj Ehlers in free agency.

But here’s the reality.
