The draft night promise angle is brilliant bc it creates instant narrative weight that compounds with each win. Most rookies play it safe publicly but Schaefer embraced the rivalry mythology immediately which accelerates his integration into team culture. Passing Orr at 18 while delivering on that promise is the kind of momentum that can define an entire carrer trajectory early.

How far does this team GO? With the nature of this NHL season combined with a Vezina Candidate and Matthew Schaefer Effect? Yes, it’s still an incomplete team. Does acquiring a Jordon Kyoru give you a legitimate shot at a Cup. It sounds preposterous, same as it did for Montreal in 1993. I think Darche has to kick the tires on Kyoru, see what Armstrong wants. Is Kyoru perfect ? Will he blossom with the Islanders? Will he remain an engima? I don’t think anyone really thought we would be here, but we are. The easy thing is to sit back and wait for the prospects. Even if we made a trade for Kyoru, it wouldn’t deplete our prospect pool. It would be a Blue Chip Prospect, #1 pick most likely ours, and a Roster Player or loose change. I believe the Kyoru contract can be stuffed under the Cap with minimal effort. Does Kyoru give the Islanders a chance to win now and down the road? Yes in my opinion the Juice is Worth the Squeeze! I’m sure Darche and the organization is doing a deep dive on the player, on whether he is a fit personality wise. The talent is there. I also think Darche and Patrick are playing it cool 😎. The company line is we aren’t ready to compete, but do they think that? It’s a poker game and a crap shoot 🎲!
