When the New York Islanders traded Brock Nelson to the Colorado Avalanche, they knew what they were giving up. The veteran forward had been a consistent 30-goal scorer and someone who had become a solid two-way forward. The scoring part was valuable, which is why the return was so great.

It’s why general manager Lou Lamoriello demanded an “untouchable” prospect in return: Calum Ritchie.

Everyone’s got a price, and it’s clear how badly the Avalanche wanted Nelson, giving up their 27th overall pick in 2023.

But prospects are, well, just that. You never know how they are going to turn out.
