When New York Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello elected to hire Patrick Roy in late January of 2024, he was looking for someone to come in and spark the group.

However, what Lamoriello also gained was a coach whose system was more in line with today’s NHL style, as opposed to what had been seen under Barry Trotz and then Lane Lambert.

Given that Roy was coming from the QMJHL with the Quebec Remparts, it made sense why he would have a system based on speed and skill.

So, that’s the system he tried to drill into his Islanders’ players minds, more so at this past training camp then trying to make too many changes upon first walking through the Northwell Health Ice Center doors.

However, like any system, it has its flaws.

Let’s take a step back for a second.
