EAST MEADOW, NY — New York Islanders veteran defenseman Scott Mayfield’s 2024–25 season didn’t end the way he envisioned. After struggling upon his return from a lower-body injury following the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off break, Mayfield lost his regular spot in the lineup, often finding himself a healthy scratch as the Islanders attempted to claw their way back into the playoff race.

They ultimately fell short, and questions quickly surfaced about Mayfield’s future — particularly with five seasons remaining on his $3.5 million-per-year contract, which includes a full no-trade clause.
