Tsyplakov, Duclair With Dandy Debuts In Opening Night Loss To Utah
ELMONT, NY – Blowing two third-period leads after clawing back is not the way the New York Islanders envisioned their season-opening game to go.
But rather than harp on the negatives in the 5-4 overtime loss—don’t worry, the negatives won’t be ignored—let’s look at two positives via the two newcomers.
Anthony Duclair, who signed a four-year deal worth $3.5 million annually this summer, got the Islanders on the board first. No, it wasn’t a snipe into the back of the net but rather a deflection off the skate:
They don’t ask how. They ask how many.
Duclair finished his night with a goal on two shots in 19:45 minutes of action (6:42 on the power play) and an assist, finding Bo Horvat to tie the game at 2-2 at 1:03 of the third on a nifty feed from below the goal line.
Maxim Tsyplakov, who signed a one-year entry-level deal worth $950,000 after a 31-goal campaign in the KHL, buried his first career NHL goal.
He gave the Islanders a 4-3 lead with 2:06 to play in regulation after he roofed one high glove side, with the puck whizzing off his stick from the slot faster than you could say “snipe”.
“It was good counter attack,” Tsyplakov said postgame. “Good timing and then good shot. It was emotional first game.”
The 26-year-old was a menace all night long, recording a goal on two shots with six hits in 20:46 minutes, 7:38 of which came on the power play where he manned the front of the crease.
Tsyplakov became the first Islanders player to score in his NHL debut since Aatu Raty on Dec. 24, 2022. He also became the first Islanders player to play more than 20 minutes in his NHL debut.
“I thought he had a strong game,” Islanders head coach Patrick Roy said on Tsyplakov. “I was happy to see him score that goal. And he was really good. He played the same way he played in the last two exhibition games. He played with that poise. I was very pleased with that.”
Upon His Return To UBS Arena, A Chat With Former Islanders Defenseman Robert Bortuzzo On His Double Overtime Magic
ELMONT, NY -- Robert Bortuzzo's time with the New York Islanders wasn't long, but it was memorable for the team and the grizzled veteran, who is now a member of the Utah Hockey Club.
After the Islanders acquired Bortuzzo from the St. Louis Blues, where he won a Stanley Cup in 2019, he played in 11 games before suffering a lower-body injury that kept him out for almost three months.
