UBS Arena ‘Seventh Man’ Key As Islanders Continue Homestand
The Islanders, who sold out Saturday night against the Blues, will need their fans to bring the energy as the homestand continues.
Lyon and tigers and bears, oh my!
Yeah, sorry about that, but couldn’t resist with Wicked hitting theatres this past weekend. The Islanders are likely to battle Alex Lyon for the third time this season when they host the Detroit Red Wings tonight at UBS Arena.
Lyon has had the Islanders’ number through two starts this season, posting a 0.50 GAA with a .981 SV%, stopping 52 of 53 shots that have come his way.
Tonight concludes the season series between the two teams and the Islanders are in desperate need of not seeing the broomsticks come out with Deroit taking the first two.
Gosh, I did it again. Wicked is just stuck in my head, forgive me.
There’s no place like home, and the Islanders need to build on their Saturday night 3-1 win over the St. Louis Blues as their homestand continues.

Islanders Brock Nelson Incredibly Scores For Pediatric Patient On Hockey Fights Cancer Night
ELMONT, NY -- When Brock Nelson buried on the power play at 15:55 of the second period, it was more than just a big-time goal for a struggling New York Islanders team.
Henry Schafer, an eight-year-old die-hard fan who had battled Leukemia for over three years, told MSGSN host Shannon Hogan that his favorite player was No. 29 and that he wanted to see Nelson score a goal.
And Nelson got the job done for Henry.

Islanders Ilya Sorokin Gets 100th Career Win To Kick Off Important Thanksgiving Stretch
With the New York Islanders returning home after dropping four of five on their road trip, losers of three straight, they were in need of a big win at UBS Arena.
And a win they got as Kyle Palmieri scored two goals, while Brock Nelson had a goal and two assists in a 3-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues.
The only reason the Islanders were able to take a lead and add to it was because of the play of goaltender Ilya Sorokin.
He stopped 24 of 25, which included stopping nine of 10 in a busy third period for his fifth win of the season and the 100th win of his NHL career.

UBS Arena ‘Seventh Man’ Key As Islanders Continue Homestand
Ahead of the Islanders’ return to UBS Arena following their five-game road trip, head coach Patrick Roy made it clear that his team needed to play better on home ice.
"I want us to be homers. We want to be homers. We want to try to win as many games as possible at home, but we need to start tonight," Islanders head coach Patrick Roy said. "We're going to focus on tonight and see how it goes. But yeah, it's time for us to win some home games and play well in front of our fans."
The Islanders’ faithful has been a major topic this season. Lackluster performances, especially on home ice, led to a quiet UBS Arena, turning home-ice advantage into an advantage for the visitors.
The fans haven’t had much to cheer about at home. Of their six home games prior to Saturday, the Islanders had blown four third-period leads (1-1-2), had been shut out 1-0 by the Detroit Red Wings, and had lost 3-1 to the Anaheim Ducks.
But on Saturday night, their seventh home game of the season, the Islanders sold out UBS Arena for the third time this season. Fans, who were shouting from the rooftops the entire night, got to witness a regulation win, with great goaltending from Ilya Sorokin, a dynamic performance by the Islanders’ second-line players on what was an emotional Hockey Fights Cancer Night.
The Islanders didn’t blow their third-period lead like they had done in the three games prior, winning key face-offs late and finding that insurance goal to send UBS Arena into a frenzy once the final horn sounded.
There’s no question that the fans' cheering and showing support impacted the Islanders’ confidence in closing out the game.
Now, the Islanders have to do more than just win one game to win back the trust of the Blue & Orange faithful. But getting a win in front of a sold-out crowd on Saturday night was an important step in rebuilding a broken bridge.
The Islanders have two more games left on this three-game homestand. They’ll play host to the Detroit Red Wings tonight and the Boston Bruins on Wednesday.
But after a quick pit stop in the nation’s capital on Friday, they’re coming right back home to face the Buffalo Sabres. They’ll play five of their next seven games before hitting the road for another three.
The Islanders will need their seventh man in the stands bringing the energy early to not only help them get off to a strong start but also have the confidence that the fan base has their backs as they try to turn their season around, one game at a time.

Establishing a home edge at UBS has not been done yet. It’s critical they start to play winning hockey at home. They are starting to play well defensively, that’s the base for consistent winning, just have to have a little uptick in scoring. Then the wins will pile up.
