What Isaiah George Was Doing When He Found Out He Was Getting Recalled By Islanders
EAST MEADOW, NY — The New York Islanders fan base didn’t see the Isaiah George call-up coming. His parents didn’t see this coming. George didn’t see this coming.
“I mean, it kinda caught me off guard,” George said to me after this morning’s skate. “I was just at home watching TV.”
Answering the phone to find out you were headed to the big show must be a highlight for every young player waiting for that opportunity.
But, the key is to answer the phone call, which George, funny enough, did not.
“I didn’t have my phone in the room, and then the show I was watching ended,” George said. “I then went on my phone and saw that I had a missed call from thirty minutes ago. So, I called them back, and then I found out.”
What 20-year-old kid doesn’t have their phone on them at all times, let alone in another room?
I kid, I kid.
“I never knew how this was supposed to happen,” George said with a laugh. “I was just doing my own thing, and then 30 minutes later, I was on the road headed to Long Island. It’s pretty cool.”
I had to know what TV show the man of the hour was watching.
“I was watching Money Heist,” George said.
For those who have watched that show—it's a great one—it’s easy to get lost in it, so we’ll give George a pass.
He’ll skate on the third defense pairing with Grant Hutton tonight, someone who he skated with in Bridgeport this season.
Speaking of Hutton, I asked him and Dennis Cholowski about George and what’s stood out about his game.
HUTTON ON GEORGE:
“I think one of his strengths is his ability to contribute in all three zones, right? So we got to play together the last game we were in Bridgeport. He scored his first professional goal. So we're riding a little bit of confidence together. So, hopefully, we can keep that going tonight.”
CHOLOWSKI ON GEORGE:
“He's a great skater. Moves the puck really well. He's got good vision. He’s a really good young player, and you can see that in just the way he plays. He plays with confidence, and I think just for him to come up and enjoy himself is really all you can do.”
Islanders Patrick Roy Reflects On His 20-Year-Old Self As A Montreal Canadien Upon George Call-Up
EAST MEADOW, NY -- The New York Islanders are down three of their six starting defensemen.
Veterans Grant Hutton and Dennis Cholowski are filling two of the holes.
But after Samuel Bolduc failed to do so on Sunday in their 5-2 loss to the New York Rangers, the Islanders are trying someone else Tuesday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
That player is 20-year-old Isaiah George, who only has four games of professional experience with the Bridgeport Islanders after a three-year junior career with the London Knights.
George, who the Islanders selected 98th overall in 2022, has a goal and an assist this season.
"The reports [from Bridgeport] were really good,” Islanders head coach Patrick Roy said. “They were very happy with him, and he's been playing really well for them. What I like about his game is he skates very well and moves the puck well. So, I think it'd be a good opportunity for him.”
