Whatever Happens, Brock Nelson Has Made The Islanders Faithful Proud
Also, Shannon Hogan moderates a women in sports panel pregame.
Brock Nelson has been a heck of a player for the New York Islanders. For a generation of fans, No. 29 has been on the team since the beginning of the fandom.
On Tuesday, he scored his 20th goal of the season, achieving that feat for the fourth straight season.
The 33-year-old played his 901st game with the Islanders, surpassing Bobby Nystrom for fourth-most in franchise history.
When Josh Bailey’s “A” became available, the organization chose Nelson.
Following the game, Nelson sat with Shannon Hogan after being named the 1st Star of the Game, with a goal and an assist:
In the room, Nelson got choked up at times.
“There's a lot going on for sure, and I've said it, I mean it, just trying to worry about playing hockey, even though there's obviously more that goes into it, in terms of a lot of things and emotions are part of it. But first and foremost, I thought was a really big win for us, bouncing back after last night where we maybe weren't our best in a big game, and tough back to back against a really good team who was rested, a really good goaltender, top team out west, and we did a good job, even though they made it tight there at the end and got the job got done.”
Does he even know what’s going to happen?
‘Not really, but, I mean, I know everything will sort itself out. It's a lot, like I said, a lot that goes into it, a lot of different things. First and foremost, I've had conversations with Lou, and I've been honest, and I really, truly have just been worried about here and playing and doing everything we can here to win.”
Did he try to take things in a little more tonight, just in case?
Nelson: “No, I don't think I did that. I think it was still just a game. I truly mean that, and I know that there's more that goes into it, and a lot of different things going on in terms of noise and scenarios and whatnot. I know I'm still playing at a high level, and just worried about trying to help the team here, and I wasn't thinking too sentimental in terms of anything here, and it was just another game. I had my kids here, they love coming. They came, saw some warm ups. They loved it, and I tried to just go about it like I have every other game.”
What does it mean for him to wear the Islanders jersey?
“It means a lot. I mean, this is a prideful group of guys in the room right now. Guys that have won it before us, the history, the legends. You see how much it means to the fan base, the island, playing, and the support that we get each and every day, whether it's game day here, UBS, think back to the Coliseum, the electricity there, and then just day to day life. I mean growing up again outside of hockey, just having a family and getting involved in different things, and seeing the support that you get from everybody outside is special. So, it means a lot for sure and I don't think anybody in here takes it for granted, and myself, especially.”

“I’m hoping he’s here. This guy has been an elite goal scorer, an elite two-way center since I’ve been here. He was a couple of years ahead of me coming into the league, but when I was first a young guy, he was kind of a rookie himself. And you try to look up to those guys and try to follow those guys. He’s set an example here for a long time.” — Ryan Pulock
New York Islanders Host Women in Sports Panel, Sponsored by Northwell
Before the puck dropped on Tuesday, the New York Islanders hosted their annual Women in Sports Night Panel. The theme for this year’s panel centers around partnerships and why teams and leagues partner with brands.
MSG’s Shannon Hogan, who has become a fixture at UBS Arena and in the Islanders community, was the moderator with the following panelists for the program:
Panelists:
• Anastasia Pagonis, Paralympian swimmer from Nassau County
• Van Adams, Principal & Founder, VanAdams Sports Group
• Violeta Ardeljan, VP Marketing & Branding, Global Industrial
• Peg Butler, VP Marketing & External Relations, Northwell Health & Lenox Hill Hospital
• Linda Pan, SVP New Media Content Partnerships, NBA
• Deb Patsky, VP Global Sales Effectiveness, Xerox
“I'm really proud to be a part of it because it's something that's really important, and the more that we can do to empower women to seek opportunities in sports, the better,” Hogan told The Elmonters.
“I always say there's plenty of room for all of us. And so having that opportunity to speak with other women that are in the industry in different places, is a real honor, and having an opportunity to connect with younger women who are looking to get into this business that I love so much, and has given me so much joy - - that is so much fun.”
