Exclusive Chat With Islanders Rookie Isaiah George After His NHL Debut, Third Period Comeback
ELMONT, NY — New York Islanders rookie Isaiah George had a successful NHL debut. Not only did the Islanders get the win, a 4-3 shootout victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins, but head coach Patrick Roy showed tremendous trust in George, which he earned early on.
In his 15:41 minute of ice time, which included late shifts in the third and a 40-second shift in overtime (4-on-4), he recorded one shot on goal, playing a ton with Noah Dobson and Ryan Pulock. He was calm and kept things simple, but he did also have a few stretch passes to help the Islanders’ forwards break into the offensive zone.
He had one turnover in the third period but had earned enough trust from Roy to give him another shot, which he did.
“Outstanding. Except for that one turnover, I thought he had a solid game,” Roy said. “I mean, he skates, and he's moving well. I think the more he's going to play, I think he's going to feel more comfortable out there. Good for him. I was happy that he was here tonight because he played a lot of minutes for his first game. I thought it was good minutes. I was very pleased with his performance. Hey, he even played in overtime. Come on. Good job, kid.”
After the game, I caught up with George to get his thoughts on his NHL debut.
