EAST MEADOW, NY — When I walked into the New York Islanders’ locker room last season following a 5-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks out in British Columbia, the song “I’m Your Man” by Wham! was blasting through the speakers.

That wasn’t the Islanders’ first win of the season — it was their fifth — but it was the first time we’d been in the room while their victory song was still playing. Usually, by the time the media is allowed in, the music is off.

Why was a song from 1986 their choice?

I went over to Islanders captain Anders Lee to find out.

“Do you know the skates — the skates we did during training camp?” Lee asked me.

“Yeah, the bag skates?” I replied.

“Roy called those Whammies,” Lee said with a laugh.

Ah… Wham! — Whammies. Suddenly, it all made sense. A perfect win song.
