Back in July, New York Islanders head coach Pete DeBoer floated Matthew Schaefer as an option to play the right side this season.

At the time, the comment came while DeBoer was discussing where Isaiah George could potentially fit on a crowded Islanders blue line.

Two months later, it’s clear that wasn’t just a hypothetical.

DeBoer revealed on TSN’s OverDrive that the Islanders have really been discussing potentially playing Schaefer on the right side this season, an idea that was reinforced by what the head coach saw while reviewing tape from the now 19-year-old’s rookie season.
