Shabanov Talks Signing With Islanders & More
Today was the first day we spoke with the Islanders big offseason signing out of Russia.
Welcome to Free Friday, the second day of rookie camp!
EAST MEADOW, NY — Maxim Shabanov has been the biggest standout so far at rookie camp, outside of Matthew Schaefer, of course.
While he might not be the biggest player, standing at just 5’9, weighing 167 pounds, he has an impressive set of hands. But his best skill set may be his raw speed.
Who knows what his role will be once he makes the NHL roster, but a guy like that alongside a Mathew Barzal — anyone with speed — will be a tough task for any opponent.
Following Day Two of Rookie Camp, we were able to speak to Shabanov through a translator, prospect Gleb Veremyev.
Q: Why did you choose to come over from the KHL?
A: “I chose America because it’s every kid’s dream to play in the NHL, and I want to challenge myself.”
Q: Why the New York Islanders?
A: “I like the team. I like the Islanders. I had good conversations with management, and I followed my heart to come here.”
Q: What’s your relationship like with Maxim Tsyplakov?
A: “We knew each other a bit from playing in the KHL together. And the other guys, like Romanov and Sorokin, have helped me get acclimated and moved in here.”
Q (from Matthew Schaefer): “What is your daily routine for your hair?”
A: “I’ve got a hair stylist.”
Q: How has it been dealing with the language barrier?
A: “I kind of just try to mingle with the guys and pick up different things. The Islanders organization will help me with a tutor and make a plan to break the language barrier.”
Q: How comfortable are you with the North American ice and style?
A: “I feel good. I like the smaller rink. It’s a faster game and that’s the way I like to play.”
Q: “Do you like to play physical?
A: (No translator) Yes, I strong.”
Q: Have you been able to build a relationship with Patrick Roy or anyone else on the coaching staff?
A: “In Russia, we were able to do Zoom calls, and when I came here, I was able to meet them. I’ve been able to build relationships.”
Q: How has the feedback been from the coaching staff so far?
A: “They’re teaching me just how to develop, like everyone else. Just the small things.”
The Lee & Aiden McMahon Foundation Silent Auction
On August 2nd, former New York Islanders equipment manager Joe McMahon and his family hosted their 24th annual Joe McMahon Family Golf Outing at Middle Island Country Club in Yaphank, NY.
Starting in 2001, after losing his mother, Lee, to brain cancer and his 18-month-old son, Aidan, to liver complications, Joe and his brothers, Tom and Mike, have helped raise close to $2 million to benefit the Hospice Care Network and American Liver Foundation.
Their silent auction from the event still has some extra items, including signed jerseys from around the league, autographed hockey cards, and much more.
