Sharks Assistant Coach Doug Houda Honest About What Went Wrong With Islanders Penalty Kill In 2023-24
When the New York Islanders relieved Barry Trotz of his duties as head coach following the 2021-22 NHL season, his assistant coach, Lane Lambert, was hired in his place.
Lambert elected to hire Doug Houda, his former Detroit Red Wings teammate who had been an assistant with Detroit since 2016 and an NHL assistant since 2006.

Houda was back on Long Island on Saturday night for the first time since being let go when San Jose battled the Islanders. His words on what went wrong with the penalty kill in 2023-24 over at The Hockey News.

The thought of playing six years in Bridgeport might not be worth the three million. It’s baffling that Engvall is such a complete bust. I would love to see him work with Oates for a Summer. It may not help because he simply plays the game like a super model that doesn’t want to touch anyone or anyone touch him. He wants to play beer league hockey with no hitting allowed.
Liam Foudy should be recalled from Bridgeport. Engvall is a complete disaster, he should be forced to play in Bridgeport for six years let him earn that money. Foudy and Jefferies should get playing time on the Island.
