Seething Patrick Roy & Players Voice Outrage After Controversial Goalie Interference Call
The Islanders thought they won, but a final second goaltender interference call goes against them.
ELMONT, NY — With 9.6 seconds to play in regulation, Kyle Palmieri deflected an Alexander Romanov point shot as it looked like the New York Islanders were going to come away victorious with a 4-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
However, the referee immediately waived off the goal for goaltender interference, leading to a league review.
After review, the call on the ice stood, and the Islanders went on to lose 4-3 in a shootout.
Here’s the non-goal:
“He said there was contact initiated in the crease,” Palmieri said postgame. “And I guess the goalie needs five minutes to get reset and ready for the shot, and it looked like he couldn't wait to waive it off.”
Following the game, head coach Patrick Roy was beside himself.
Here’s the transcript:
Q: How did you see the no-goal call?
Roy: “I think I saw it the same way you guys saw it. Palmieri was out of the crease and we tipped it in, and I think their goalie pushed him away at the same time. So, that’s how I see it. If Toronto is afraid to overturn calls made by their referee, we don't need Toronto. That's all I want to say.”
Q: How frustrating is it to play the way you did and only get one?
Roy: “We didn't play well in the third. We were outstanding in the first. We were good in the second. We didn't give much. They scored these two goals, that tip on Dobson. But other than this, I thought we had a strong game. But in the third period, we stopped playing in their zone. We stop, playing simple. [We weren’t] quick on the wall, bringing the puck. We lost a lot of battles. We had a power play to start [the period]. And I didn't think we competed hard enough to get those pucks, and I thought that was the difference in the game. But overall, we played well enough. We should have won that game. In my mind, we won the game.”
Q: How can you instruct players to play around the crease when-
Roy: “You should call the league and tell our players because I don't know what to say anymore. I mean, if you're outside of the crease, I always thought that that was the place to be. That's all. I mean, are you telling me the Slafkovsky goal was not worse than what we saw tonight?”
Q: What was the explanation you got from the call?
Roy: “They never came to see me.”
Here was Bo Horvat’s quotes:
“Kyle did a good job of coming by and then feeling the goaltender, then being able to get out and make that tip before the puck was even shot. I thought it was a great play by him. And, I mean, I think that's the frustrating part is we don't know anymore. It's a guessing game all the time. We've been called back so many times, it feels like, in the last week or two. And it's just really getting frustrating when we're pushing for a playoff spot. That's obviously a game-winning goal late in a hockey game. And to me, it's just unacceptable.”
